Brian Crumbo, Head Cross Country Coach

Coach Crumbo has been coaching high school cross country and track since 1991.  He began his coaching career at Western Hills High School in Frankfort, KY, and quickly built the program into a powerhouse.  The Western Hills girls team won class AA cross country championships each year from 1994-1998, and the boys team won regional championships four times in seven years, with five top-7 finishes at the state meet.  In track, the Western Hills girls won class AA state titles in 1996 and 1998, while the boys team finished 3rd in 1997.  From 1999-2003, Crumbo coached at Seton High School in Cincinnati, OH, where his girls cross country team won the school’s first-ever GGCL league championship in 2001, and the track team progressed from last to 2nd in the league in just one year.  Most recently Crumbo coached the Shelby County, KY, girls cross country team in 2006.  This is his second year leading the cross country teams at Fern Creek.

Crumbo graduated in 1986 from Floyd Central High School in New Albany, IN, for whom he placed 4th in the 1985 Indiana state cross country championships and was awarded the prestigious Charles F. Maas Mental Attitude Award.  In track, he set a still-standing school record in the 1600m run of 4:16.20 while placing 6th at the 1986 Indiana state track meet.  From Floyd Central, Crumbo went on to attend Georgia Tech, where he was team captain and 1988 Georgia State Intercollegiate cross country champion.  He had collegiate personal bests of 3:56 for 1500m, 14:41 for 5,000m, and 30:31 for 10,000m on the track.

Crumbo earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Georgia Tech in 1990 and his Master of Science in the same field from the University of Kentucky in 1998.  He was a professional software developer for 17 years before completing his Master of Arts in Teaching at Bellarmine University and becoming a high school teacher in 2007.  He has been married to his wife, Ginger, since 1993 and has two children:  Mikayla (6) and Elliott (2).

Paul Hall, Assistant Cross Country Coach

Coach Hall started his coaching career in 1978 at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA.  While there, he was head cross-country coach for 6 years, and assistant track coach or head track coach for 7 years (4 years head).  His teams were very successful, posting a dual meet record in CC of 71 wins and only 14 losses.  They also hosted a cross country invitational each year, finishing no worse than third and winning twice.  While they were not eligible to go to state, they did compete against the best competition they could find and were generally recognized as the best cross country team in northeast Georgia.

Coach Hall spent the late 80's coaching middle school track at Breck School in Minneapolis, then moved to Kentucky in 1992.  He coached at St. Francis High School in Louisville until 2001 and had success that was not measured so much in wins and losses as in individual accomplishments.  The school had never sent anyone to state before in either sport.  In his years there, the team sent someone to state in both sports every year.  The team had 10 individual or relay state champions (indoors and outdoors), as well as many All-State performers.  Coach Hall spent one year as head boys track coach at Kentucky Country Day and the team finished 4th in state that year.  He was assistant cross country coach at Spalding University for one year, and their only girl runner was conference runner up and all-conference.

Aaron McAndrew, Co-Head Coach Men’s & Women’s Track, Assistant Cross Country Coach

Cited as one of the “brightest young sprint minds at the high school level” by numerous publications, Aaron McAndrew is entering his third season at the helm of the Fern Creek Track & Field program and 5th season as a head coach.  Over the last few seasons Aaron has been a part of one of the biggest turnarounds in Kentucky Track and Field history.  Before McAndrew arrived at Fern Creek the men’s and women’s teams failed to qualify a single athlete to the KY state meet in almost a decade.  It had been over twice that long since the Tigers managed to score a single point at the State Championships.

In McAndrew’s first season as head coach, Fern Creek not only qualified 4 female athletes on two relays at the 2007 KHSAA State Championships and earned All-State honors.  Fern Creek placed a School record 23rd in the state in 2007.

In 2007 the Men’s team qualified all three relays to the KHSAA State Championships for the first time in school history.  All three relays went on to achieve All-State honors with the 4x100m earning a runner-up finish.

In 2008, the lady tigers finished another school record 11th place in the KHSAA State Championships, which made them the highest place finish of any women’s sport at Fern Creek in close to 15 years.   The Fern Creek 4x100 relay won the 2008 KHSAA State Championship. (First time in school history) They recorded the fastest time at the KHSAA State Meet in over a decade.  The ladies had 6 athletes with All-State performances.

The Men’s team finished a school record 8th in the 2008 KHSAA State Championships while qualifying all three relays for the second consecutive year.  The 4x100m relay broke the school record to take second place.  The tigers had 12 athletes on the men’s team with All-State performances.

In 2005 Aaron McAndrew took over the Women’s program at his alma mater, Floyd Central High School in southern Indiana.  In just two seasons, McAndrew took the Lady Highlanders to their first Sectional Championship in 16 years and their first state ranking in just as long.  In 2006 they finished 14th in the IHSAA State Championships. Coach McAndrew was named Hoosier Hills Conference Coach of the Year in 2006.  During his two seasons at Floyd Central two Highlander athletes signed Division 1 Scholarships and multiple school records were broken.

Aaron is a former Captain of the University of Louisville Track and Field team, where he competed in college. He is a two-time school record holder in the 4x400m relay and 4x200m relay.  Aaron is currently on 6 of the top 10 4x400m times in Louisville history.  Through college he was coached by two of the top sprint coaches in the country Matt Girardin (former UofL sprints) and John McNichols (Indiana State).  Aaron received his bachelors in Business Administration Management and Marketing from the University of Louisville and is currently in Graduate School working on his Masters in Business Education.  Throughout the last 4 years McAndrew has spoken at numerous state clinics and camps throughout the region including: Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.
